I took a fabulous road trip yesterday.
I hit the road for Memphis with W, and we had a goal of bargain shopping at the Williams-Sonoma Outlet and a pork tenderloin sandwich at the frou-frou art/antique/cafe shop.

We hit Williams-Sonoma first, and we were very pleased with the selection.  We've been twice in the past year, without any good bargains for the trip.  Yesterday, I purchased the mandoline that I've been wanting, two cookbooks (vegetables and soups/stews), a set of cutting boards, some Madagascar bourbon vanilla paste, some bar mop towels, and a microplane zester.  W got to use her gift card from Christmas on some cookbooks (vegetables and cakes) and a set of cutting boards.  We walked out to the car on a bargain shopping high.

We drove across the middle of Memphis, stopping to get Powerball tickets (which I didn't win), to get to the cafe. On the door, they had posted a sign that the shop was open but the cafe was closed.  W had checked  their web page in the morning, just to make sure they were still serving the best sandwiches on the planet.  We drove over a few streets and found a stretch of restaurants, and were walking to Bosco's when we read the menu for Paulette's.  When we walked in the restaurant, we immediately knew that this was the place where the wealthy ladies of Memphis went for Saturday brunch.  We started with popovers and strawberry butter.  W had grilled chicken on a bed of bland rice and I had a ham/cheese/apple foccacia sandwich.

So when the host seated us, he took away W's white napkin and gave her a black napkin. I immediately started thinking of several reasons:
1) Black napkin is secret napkin code to wait staff about the type of patron she was
2) She was the millionth brunch patron since the opening of the restaurant in 1974, and she would get a prize
3) Black helicopters

Turns out that the black napkin was for her black pants.  White napkins leave white fuzz on dark pants. (much more boring than anything that ran through my mind)
