Adult Spelling Bee
Jun. 16th, 2007 05:06 pmClay and I went to an adult spelling bee. A local church decided to try it as a fundraiser. I think there were 21 contestants, including my state representative. As the church filled, we noticed a lot of gay. Yes, I know it's a spelling bee. We certainly had the librarian/writer/english teacher contingent in the room. It was just surprising to see that so many lesbians (and not necessarily the librarians/writers/teachers) were interested in spelling.
As the contestants progressed, the words were wildly inconsistent in difficulty within rounds. We suspected that the bee was rigged for the state representative (not gay) to win. He was getting words like "carousel" when others were getting antidisestablishmentarianism. His winning word was fajita (which according to the people sitting behind us, is his favorite food). I did snap a photo early in the bee, and we had a fabulous time (ennui was one of the words).
